'Vegas Dave' enters not guilty plea in federal court

LAS VEGAS - In the world of sports betting, David Oancea is known as "Vegas Dave," a prolific gambler with a history of winning big.  But to federal prosecutors Oancea is a criminal who used false social security numbers to get around the system.

On Wednesday, Oancea made his first federal court appearance and entered a not guilty plea.

Two days before his court appearance "Vegas Dave" was as brash as ever posting a video of him dropping off piles of cash to a bank on Twitter.  According to Ooancea, people who try to bring him down aren't haters they're fans.

However, when Oancea walked into the courthouse he didn't face haters, he faced prosecutors and 20 felony charges related to his well-known sports gambling.

As a gambler, Oancea has won and lost millions of dollars betting on games.  But, last week, federal prosecutors accused "Vegas Dave" of using fake or different social security numbers on more than 170 large transactions.

"I think the government's actions here are definitely vindictive," said Paul Padda, Oancea's attorney.

Padda, along with Tom Pitaro represent Oancea in the case.

"It's clear from what's happened here, that there's no allegation that he hasn't been beating the casinos with his betting," Pitaro said.

During the court proceedings, conditions were placed on his release, and he was planning to talk with us outside.

Unexpectedly, according to his attorneys, Oancea was arrested by Metro Police while being processed by the U.S. Marshals.  He had a warrant against him for domestic battery.

"I've been doing this forty years," Pitaro said.  "I don't think I've ever seen such pettiness as that sort of a move."

The federal judge is allowing Oancea to continue his gambling business, as long as he uses a legitimate social security number.  His trial is expected to start in June.
