Victims of Domestic Violence Remembered in Ceremony

LAS VEGAS -- During a ceremony Monday morning, the names of last year's victims of domestic violence were read aloud and added to a plaque.

Seventeen people died as a result of domestic violence in Clark County last year. Although an improvement from previous years, police officials said the number is too high.

In 2010, 30 people were killed while in an abusive relationship.

According to Metro Police and the Southern Nevada Domestic Violence Council, a combination of new laws and procedures have brought the number of deaths down.

Following the reading of the name and age of each victim, a rose was placed in a vase to honor their life.

The father of 25-year-old Michelle Carson came from southern California to be at the ceremony.

John Carson said after his daughter was killed in 2010, he has made it his mission to spread awareness about domestic violence.

"Domestic violence is all about control," Carson said. "That is not love. It's control, and there is a difference. (With) love, you don't hit the person. A man does not hit a woman."

Carson said his daughter was visiting Las Vegas with her best friend to celebrate their college graduation and the start of their masters program.

He said she was killed after meeting up with an ex-boyfriend.

Carson said he applauds the new laws and procedures that have helped bring down the rate of domestic violence deaths in Nevada, such as the lethality assessment, a form that asks victims 13 questions to help identify if they are at risks of being killed.
