LAS VEGAS - Students in Mr. Paul Tick's woodshop class at Legacy High School need steady hands, sharp eyes and patience. They sand different kinds of wood and craft it into ritzy pens.
"We take those pens. We sell them. It's just fun," Tick said.
"This is like my favorite class," said junior Dakotah Rivera.
Tick came up with the idea. The class sells many of their sharp-looking pens to help fund the woodshop program and club at Legacy. The sales help the club travel to Reno and compete in a national competition. Other pens are sculpted for gifts.
"Typically, graduates get a pen/pencil kit for their graduation. Well, he's going to make his own gift. I have some students who gave them away as gifts for Christmas," Tick said.
Senior Sarah Cummings still uses the first pen she made. "It really doesn't take very long - like an hour. I get to use it at school. Look guys, I made this," she said.
"They come out good when you take your time. I remember making my first pen. I needed to go slow. It was my favorite, because it was the first pen I made," Rivera said.
Rivera is in his third year of woodshop class. He still makes pens, but he's added to his resume, building tables and other items.
There isn't much the kids can't make. A look at the finished products in the shop's collection reveals different shapes, sizes, grains and some pencils. All of the items function as well as they look.
"I guess it's up to the operator of the pen, but they write really well," Rivera said.
Mr. Tick says he's received calls from a few businesses, including a law office, that want to order a batch of the Legacy pens.
