Whittemore Sentenced to 2 Years

RENO, Nev. -- A federal judge in Nevada sentenced an ex-lobbyist and wealthy developer to two years in prison for funneling illegal campaign contributions to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks in Reno to sentence Harvey Whittemore to more than four years at Monday afternoon's sentencing in Reno for three felony convictions.

Whittemore's lawyers said he deserved probation and community service partly because he would do Nevadans more good out of prison based on his long history of charitable giving.

His sister, Ellen Whittemore, had requested to testify at the sentencing. She said the prosecution's claim her brother was "greedy for power" is absurd. She said her brother is an honest philanthropist who enjoyed his success because it allowed him to be more generous.
