Woman arrested for arson in apt. fire

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas woman has been arrested for arson in connection with an apartment fire near Charleston Boulevard and Fremont Street.

According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, 29-year-old June Wilkinson was arrested on four counts of arson in connection with the fire which started just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Witnesses told fire investigators that Wilkinson set a couch that was in the alleyway on fire. The fire quickly spread to a tree and a nearby vacant apartment building. Witnesses also say that after setting the fire, Wilkinson left the scene, but several people followed her. They say she set bush on fire, before she ran into a Metro Police officer, who detained her.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 10 minutes. No one was hurt. Damage to the building is estimated at $50,000. The fire also damaged over television and telephone wires that were overhead, which will have to be replaced.

Fire investigators believe Wilkinson maybe responsible for several other fires in the same area over the past several weeks.
