Woman facing identity theft charges in voter fraud case

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas woman is under arrest on seven felony charges, after investigators say she used another person's identity to work in the country illegally and tried to register to vote twice under the false name, the Nevada Secretary of State investigators announced Tuesday.

According to the Nevada Attorney General's Office, Biqui Diana Parra Rodriguez got personal information about another person and fraudulently registered to vote twice under a false name.

Rodriguez used the personal information of Mary Lou Aguirre to register to vote in Oct. 2011 and almost a year later, she used the information again to register to vote, authorities said.

The charges against Rodriguez include burglary and a several charges related to obtaining and illegally using another person's identity.

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller says the case shows the state's systems to catch this type of fraud works.

"This was a very sophisticated case," Miller said. "This woman actually stole the identity of another individual from Texas and was living here, had registered to vote illegally."

When Parra-Rodriguez applied for a driver's authorization card in April, investigators caught on to the scheme because she applied for the driver's card using her real name. Investigators were able to spot that she had already applied for an ID using a false name because of facial recognition software.

"Same person, different IDs, we got a match," Miller added.

Rodriguez is being held at Clark County Detention Center on $65,000 bail.

Miller says she never impacted the outcome of any election.
