Woman recounts recounts her child's death in hot car

LAS VEGAS - A family vacation took a tragic turn over the weekend.

Three-year-old Chase Lee died after police say he was forgotten in a hot car.

It happened Saturday evening at the Grandview Las Vegas Resort near Silverado Ranch and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Investigators say during a large gathering, family members lost track of the child who was still in the car. It only takes minutes for conditions inside a vehicle to turn deadly.

While it might be difficult for some to understand how a family can forget about a baby, we spoke to a mother who says she's living proof it can happen to anyone.

Jodi Newcomb has the misfortune of knowing how it feels to lose a child trapped in a hot car. Her son, Michael, died in May of 2001.

"My son was playing hide and seek and chose my car as his hiding place, went into the trunk of my car," Newcomb said.

She blamed herself and so did the public.

"To pass judgment you have to put those, yourself in that person's shoes because, you know, you always say it's never going to happen to me. It happened to me," she said.

Newcomb turned her grief into action becoming an advocate for hot car safety. In fact, she went public with her story to help pass a state law making it illegal to leave a child in or around a vehicle.

Nevada is one of 20 states with an "unattended child law."

Still, Newcomb believes accidents do happen.

"It was I think a moment of, you know, just forgetting, you know, being in a rush because of a family event you know," Newcomb said.

Since 1998,12 children in Nevada have died of heat stroke after being left in hot cars. The last incident before this Saturday's was back in 2015, when a man forgot his grandson in a car. In that case, police also believe it was an accident.
