Woman Seeks Permit for Exotic Animals

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas woman is trying to get permission from Clark County to keep 11 exotic animals in her home.

The exotic animals aren't lions, tigers or chimpanzees – but smaller critters.

Inside Stacey Weiss' home is a jungle, her exotic animals kept in their own rooms and individual enclosures.

She is seeking permits for such animals as an opossum, hedgehog, sugar glider and kinkachu.

"We don't have any animals that are going to eat you," Weiss said. "We're not looking at chimps, I should say, we're not looking at lions and tigers, we're looking at all small stuff."

Weiss said the creatures are for entertainment, but also education.

Her non-profit, Wild Adventures Zoo, visits schools and hospitals such as Sunrise Hospital to brighten a child's day.

"(We) brought in our sugar glider, that kid lit up," she said. "I mean, he was non-stop smiling and couldn't stop talking about it."

Weiss' exotics weigh less than 10 pounds.

County commissioner Susan Brager said exotic pet owners need to be responsible.

"There are some exotic animals that are well-intended to be a human's pet, but there are some that we would be their pet," she said. "In doing that, you can be better prepared before you spend money on an animal that isn't possibly allowed in your home, having the proper cages, having the proper veterinarian that works with that type of animal."

And know your animal's limitations and needs.

Weiss said she has plans to get three more animals, including a 120 pound rodent called a capybara.
