Woman Speaks Out About Brutal Machete Attack

LAS VEGAS -- The woman who was allegedly attacked by her ex-boyfriend is speaking out. Maria Gomez says she wants others in domestic violence situations to avoid her fate.

"I can't do so many things," Maria Gomez said. She is essentially helpless. Both of her arms are bandaged after her hands were severed. Police say Armando Vergara-Martinez, Gomez's former boyfriend, attacked her with a machete.

"You know, this is like a nightmare. I'm frustrated because I can't do anything by myself," Gomez said.

Doctors managed to re-attach Gomez's severed hands but it will take her months to heal. Police say Vergara-Martinez took an 18 inch machete and attacked the woman. Gomez says her attack should serve as a warning to others who may be in violent situations.

"Whoever is violent, man or woman, stay away from them. Just walk away or finish or whatever but don't stay there," Gomez said.

Gomez is getting some help from Safe Faith United, a group of religious members who help victims of domestic violence. Their phone number is (702)685-1500.  Her ex-boyfriend he has been charged with attempted first degree murder with a deadly weapon.
