LAS VEGAS -- Friends gathered Friday to remember a woman killed by domestic violence. Daisy Dahan's co-workers say they were just learning of the dangers she faced when she was stabbed to death at her home.

Dahan's death is bringing light to the dangers women can face when trying to end a relationship. Her husband, Richard, walked into a police substation last week and said he had stabbed his wife to death. He told police, his wife was sitting at the kitchen table when he attacked her. He said, his wife wanted a divorce and he didn't.

Registered nurse Daisy Dahan cared for the people of Lifecare Center of Las Vegas and they loved her, but at home she was dealing with a much different situation. Her marriage was unraveling. She and her husband had moved to Las Vegas from the Philippines. Daisy confided there were problems in her home.

"She always assured us that she'll get out of it," friend and co-worker Elizabeth Fisher said.

She was one of the only people Daisy told about the abuse and it haunts her now.

"We have some guilt. She just kept telling us, 'give me some time, we'll take care of this, just a little time.'"

Domestic violence expert Lisa Lynn Chapman of Safe Nest says abuse often goes unreported, especially in Hispanic and Filipino communities.

"There's very large pressure from community leaders not to air any dirty laundry," Chapman said.

For some women, seeking help comes with even more barriers.

"If you don't speak English very well then having that language barrier at a mainstream organization like Safe Nest can be very intimidating," she said.

When Fisher saw Daisy crying, she said the 28-year-old tried to hide it.

"You want to hold on to the culture, in your marriage, you stay with the marriage and divorce is not an option," Fisher said.

Now, her Lifecare family is looking to send her remains home to the Philippines. Lifecare Center of Las Vegas is holding a car wash and bake sale Saturday, Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help with the expenses. The center is located at 6151 Vegas Drive near Jones Boulevard. There is also a bank account set up at Wells Fargo. The account number is 8686883912.
