Wounded Soldier Gets Fresh Start, Free New Home

LAS VEGAS -- A soldier who bravely served his country, and was severely injured, can now recover in the comfort of his new Las Vegas home.

"Operation Finally Home" and Pulte Homes teamed together to make Thursday extra special for Army Sgt. Christopher Bales, who now has a fresh start and a brand new home, free of charge.

And that left Bales virtually speechless.

"Shock, really, I was blown away."

Bales received keys to the modern, completely furnished home in Mountain's Edge on Thursday.

"It's a brand new home," he said. "I'm a homeowner, which is amazing. I mean, what a start -- what a start."

The soldier served two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, it was in Afghanistan when he was badly hurt while on Sniper patrol. His troop was ambushed. Bales left his position to draw enemy fire away from others in his patrol.

He was shot, leaving his leg paralyzed.

Bales earned the Purple Heart -- and now this nice, new home through the non-profit "Operation Finally Home."

"This is an opportunity for this family to begin their new normal, to continue their journey of hearling, recovery and all the things necessary that they need to do to survive," said Stephen Page, Dir. of Corporate Sponsorship for the non-profit.

Dignitaries like Congressman Joe Heck and Gov. Brian Sandoval were also on hand Thursday.

"Chris Bales is an American hero. He's a young man who served our country, who sacrificed himself to save others," said Sandoval.

"Operation Finally Home" said they plan to give away 60 homes to deserving American heroes this year. All of the homes are 100 percent mortgage-free.
