Wranglers won't return to ice until 2015/16

LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas Wranglers hockey team will not return to the ice until the 2015/2016 season, according to club president Billy Johnson.

Johnson tells 8 News NOW that the ECHL, which is the league the hockey team is part of, granted the team a voluntary suspension to allow ample time to find a new venue.

The details of a new home arena will be announced at a later date. When the details are announced and season tickets go on sale for that venue, priority will be given to current season ticket holders.

A deal to build a rink, stands, locker rooms and media space for the team at the Plaza Hotel and Casino downtown recently fell through. The team needed to find a new place to play after Boyd Gaming canceled its deal earlier this year with the team to play at the Orleans Arena.

"The only news that matters today is that we are playing in Las Vegas in 2015, and we're playing in the ECHL." Johnson said. "Now we have a more appropriate amount of time to do things the best way possible, as opposed to rushing into something that our fans may not ultimately embrace. In this case, a year off is a very good thing for Wranglers fans. This still is ‘my town, my team.'"
