Xerox to address health insurance exchange website problems

LAS VEGAS - The company in charge of running the Nevada Health Link website will roll out its plan to prevent future glitches. Thousands of Nevadans experienced technical problems when attempting to enroll online for a health insurance plan.

Nevada hired Xerox to run the Nevada Health Link website. Company representatives will go before the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange Board Thursday morning.

During the meeting, Xerox officials are expected to present a plan explaining how they will help people who have had problems with Nevada Health Link.

The board is also scheduled to vote whether to approve funding for additional navigators who can help potential enrollees.

Some of the technical issues people encountered include not being able to click on the button to confirm a plan selection and page errors with the plans displayed for the state.

Nevada Health Link Communications Officer CJ Bawden says Xerox is working daily to fix the problems on the website.

"We had 182 identified problems with the system in February. Now, it's down to approximately 40 to 45 problems today," he said.

As of March 22, more than 35,000 people have signed up for a health insurance plan. Approximately 23,000 of them have already started making payments on their health care coverage.

The original goal was to enroll 118,000 Nevadans. Nevada Health Link officials reduced that goal to 50,000 enrollees.

They also extended the deadline to enroll because of the website glitches. The extension applies to people who have begun the application process and encountered technical problems. The deadline for everyone else is March 31. If you miss the deadline and don't qualify for the extension, you will be fined when you file your taxes next year. The fine is $95 per adult or 1 percent of your income, whichever is higher.

The extension runs until May 30th. Silver State Health Insurance Exchange Board members said as many as 300,000 applicants could be affected by the website glitches and may qualify for the enrollment extension.

If you need help enrolling, Nevada Health Link is hosting an enrollment event Saturday, March 29. The event is free.
