Metro Police investigated a shooting Thursday near N. Rainbow Boulevard and W. Gowan Road.
Officers were dispatched to the area of 6600 W. Gowan Road around 12:11 p.m. to investigate a report of a person shot. Police say the shooting occurred at Children’s Memorial Park.
When officers arrived, they found the victim and another person in a car. The other person, who wasn’t hurt, was driving the victim to the hospital.
Metro officer pulled the car over and called for an ambulance. Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital with none life-threatening injuries.
The shooter jumped into a getaway car and disappeared from the area before officers arrived, Metro said. He has since been taken into custody.
According to detectives, a fight between a group of young adults, possibly teens, led to the shooting.
“It’s very disturbing, said Michael Wilson, a regular park goer. “It is very disturbing because of the matter of the fact that anybody here could get shot. You know, especially by a stray bullet.”
During a news conference with the media, Metro Police made it clear that the incident didn’t have anything to do with school or a school shooting.
“As a parent, as a police officer, of course, it would worry us,” said Officer Larry Hadfield, a spokesperson for Metro Police. “However, I just want to make sure that everybody knows that school is not in session. This incident did not happen in a school. It had nothing to do with school. Our hearts go out to Florida and the victim’s families.”
