LAS VEGAS - Some changes on the Laughlin waterfront are in the works.
Clark County commissioners passed several items related to the Laughlin Lagoon Tuesday.
Local leaders see the project as an economic development opportunity for the Colorado River community.
Nearly two decades of sediment has built up in a lagoon fed by the Colorado River, but once it's cleared out, leaders think it will open the door to economic development on the south end of town.
Near the Laughlin Bay Marina, the reeds rustle in the wind.
The shallow waters of the lagoon gently lap up on the shoreline.
"I've always viewed this as the linchpin to the economic development," said James Maniaci, chairman, Laughlin Town Advisory Board.
Local leaders say this offshoot of the Colorado River is the linchpin to economic development in the southern tip of the state.
Laughlin Town Advisory Board Chairman James Maniaci says property values along the lagoon will rise and projects like a high-end RV park are already in the works.
The hope is to draw jobs along with it.
"That will help us attract more businesses here, so that we don't have the problem of always having to go into another state for most of our services," Maniaci said.
The Laughlin township is in the final phases of forming a special improvement district to repay the construction bonds.
The project will cost about $3.4 million and due to environmental regulations, contractors will have four months to dredge a channel into the lagoon.
The five to seven feet of silt will help eventually form a park connecting to a nearby state park on the river.
"The state land division has agreed to let the contractor put the spoil on the 25-acre site immediately to the south, which is still within the lagoon," Maniaci said.
He says the project will also help kick-start infrastructure improvements in the southern end of town. The project is expected to go out to bid in the next several weeks.
The hard deadline to wrap up work is Dec. 31.
