The city of Henderson is getting a state-of-the-art ice rink. Officials will release more details Tuesday night at the Henderson City Council meeting.
The facility is expected to be built at the current site of the Henderson Convention Center at the corner of W Atlantic Ave and S Water St.
The rink will be similar to City National Arena in Downtown Summerlin, the current corporate headquarters and training facility for the Vegas Golden Knights of the NHL.
City National also hosts UNLV hockey and a number of youth skating events. The need for more permanent ice rinks is growing with increased interest in skating and hockey.
The Knights franchise and the city of Henderson are working together to build the new rink as part of the team’s community requirements with the NHL.
“The Golden Knights are committed to coming to Henderson,” said Mayor Deborah March, as she broke the news of the arena on 8 News Now Good Day earlier this month. “30% of the folks that go out to Summerlin are coming from the Henderson community, so this is an opportunity for them to support and encourage that same level of enthusiasm for the sport.”
Vegas Valley Hockey player John Antoniadis echoed that sentiment while skating at City National.
“I am a Henderson native,” said Antoniadis. “A lot of our skaters are based out of Henderson, so it would be great if we had a rink (there). You’re looking at five to 10 minutes versus a half an hour.”
Documents on Henderson’s website show the project will take up 3.2 acres. If plans are approved at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, the Knights and the city of Henderson will have 180 days to work out contracts for the project.
Several other big projects are underway in Henderson, including a Google data center, the practice facility and headquarters for the Raiders NFL team, and a number of new businesses along St. Rose Parkway.
