LAS VEGAS - CSN students start classes next week and they will have new and unique degrees to choose from when considering career opportunities.
The college is adding programs it says reflects the demands in the local workforce.
"It's really hard cause it's like for the rest of your life," said Marlene Herasimtschuk, CSN student.
She has not declared a major at CSN.
"I just kind of did like a general thing so I can think about it, make up my mind. I still haven't made up my mind though."
She has her eye on criminal justice but has many other options. For the first time this year, the college is offering a Bachelor's Degree in Deaf Studies. It was previously only offered as an associates degree.
"It's designed to prepare a student to get out there and actually interpret for the courts, the school systems," said Lester Tanaka, interim dean, CSN School of Arts & Letters.
By CSN estimations, there are about 39,000 people with hearing disabilities in the state and less than 100 professionals who can help them.
"There are not a lot of schools out there and if you look regionally, there are not a lot of choices for students," Tanaka said.
By spring time, CSN is expecting to offer an Associates Degree in unmanned aviation systems technology, in response to the growing use of drones. Students can begin taking classes now.
"So, a student is able to come here and get a very technical degree in this very fast-moving degree program in unmanned aviation systems," said Professor Art Eggers, CSN.
Next fall, the college plans to offer a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing.
By then, Herasimtschuk hopes to have made up her mind. For now, she's gearing up for the 2018 fall semester.
"I'm nervous, just because I have a lot on my plate, but I'm sure I'll be fine."
CSN offers more than 10 bachelor's degrees and a long list of associate and certification programs including pastry arts, and floral design technology.
Classes start Monday, Aug. 27.
