ONLY ON 8: Summerlin man talks about completing ‘World Marathon Challenge’

Imagine running seven marathons all across the globe in just the span of one week. That was the challenge one Summerlin man accepted.

Seven marathons on seven continents in seven days is formally known as ‘The World Marathon Challenge.’  Among the 41 runners was Las Vegan Michael Crome.

“Everyone thought that it was crazy, and admittedly, I thought it was crazy as well,” Crome said.

Stop number one on his marathon tour was Antarctica, which, was no doubt the toughest part.

“Sometimes your foot would sink because it was deep snow, other times your feet would slip because of ice,” Crome said.

From there the runners went to Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, and South America.  The North American part of the race was then rounded out in Miami.

“I wanted to challenge myself, my body and my mind to see if this is something that I actually could do,” Crome said.

One of the biggest hurdles Crome faced was the jet lag.

“The pressurization of the plane, sure, but it was also just the ability to stretch out,” Crome said.

Crome runs six days a week, but marathons are pretty new for him. He’s only run three of them before this globe-trotting adventure. But for the athlete, this was much more than a run.  Throughout his journey, he was raising money for Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada, which provides entrepreneurship opportunities for kids.

“I wanted to figure out a way to get people excited about the organization,” according to Crome.

Crome surpassed his goal of $25,000.  Now, he wants his accomplishments to inspire others.

“I believe that if you really put your mind, and the time into it, for anyone, I think you can go beyond the limits that you think that you have,” Crome said.

Crome rested for a few days after his trek around the world, but he’s back to training now.

His next race is the Toyko Marathon which is in three weeks.
