Replacement chosen to fill Kelvin Atkinson’s senate seat

Local News

Marsha Washington, a retired Clark County fire inspector, will fill former state Senator Kelvin Atkinson’s seat.

She was chosen Friday by the Clark County Commission. Washington was also a former state Board of Education member and she was backed by the Culinary Union.

Atkinson, a District 4 state senator, stepped down after admitting to using $250,000 of campaign funds for his own use. However, federal prosecutors and investigators believe Atkinson stole more. A plea agreement states Atkinson did not report more than $450,000 in campaign donations between 2010 and 2017.

He will be sentenced July 11. Atkinson could face up to 20 years behind bars.

Washington will serve the rest of Atkinson’s term which ends in 2020. She is the sixth appointment to the legislature made by the commission since December.
