School leaders, police year-end school safety

As the school year comes to a close, CCSD and local law enforcement are addressing school safety.

Representatives from several departments held a news conference Wednesday to discuss increased school safety efforts and police patrols to be put in place as the end of the school year approaches. This comes as 17 firearms have been confiscated from students -- so far -- this school year.

In addition to those, 31 BB or airsoft guns were taken from students. Also, six firearms were confiscated from adults including those with concealed carry licenses because it's illegal to have guns on a school campus.

Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara says students and community members reporting threats through the SafeVoice app is really making a difference this year.

"We're catching individuals who are making threats against our schools and we will hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law," he said.

The last day of school is May 23.
