A valley kindergarten teacher is turning to the community to give her class a special reading rug this Christmas.
Miss Kristen Gilroy spends her days molding minds at Oran K. Gragson Elementary School. She told 8 News NOW she’s always looking for new tools to enhance the learning experience.
“I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Gilroy said. “I love having all of them.”
Gilroy’s classroom’s creative designs and dazzling decorations show her love for learning.
“That’s our main goal is for them to get the best education possible,” Gilroy added. “I love the kids and I love being here and it’s amazing to see how much progress they make to the beginning to the end of the year. “
Gilroy teaches her 23 kindergarten students sitting on a reading rug, but they’re in desperate need of an upgrade.
“We spend most of our days on the rug and that’s where all of our learning takes place,” Gilroy said. “I try to teach them, okay sit in your bubble, and it kinda doesn’t work in this one.”
The new rug her class wants has 26 colorful spaces for each letter of the alphabet. Gilroy said it will send her students to the next level of learning.
“It will cut down on wasted space like asking kids where your rug spot is,” Gilroy said. “Where is your rug spot?”
The rug also carries a $600 price tag, so Miss Gilroy turned to school material website DonorsChoose.org for help with her project.
“It’s just helpful that other people are out there,” Gilroy said. “Willing to donate materials to our classroom.”
According to Gilroy, every single donation gets her one step closer to granting her students this special Christmas gift.
“The kids would be so excited to have the brand new rug in our classroom,” Gilroy said. “It will just make the learning environment a lot better.”
Miss Gilroy’s DonorsChoose.org project ends on December 28, 2018. They still need to raise $427 to purchase their new rug.
