Pres. George H.W. Bush and why Texas Republicans credit him for putting party on the map


A handsome and well-spoken war hero, George H.W. Bush was sought as a candidate by both parties. He chose the Republicans.  

President Richard Nixon appointed Bush ambassador to the United Nations and, after the 1972 election, named him chairman of the Republican National Committee. Bush struggled to hold the party together as Watergate destroyed the Nixon presidency.
