Security guard charged with murder in shooting near the Strip

LAS VEGAS - The security guard who police said shot and killed a man on Thursday is booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a murder charge.

Police identified the shooting suspect as 29-year-old Spence Trevathan.

The shooting happened in a motel parking lot near Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Boulevard around 12:45 p.m.

Video surveillance captured Trevathan exchanging words with the victim from the second-floor walkway of the motel before he walked down to the parking lot and started a fight, according to a report by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

During the scuffle, Trevathan shot the victim who died at the hospital.

At first, investigators were not certain if Trevathan would face charges as they worked to determine if the shooting was in self-defense. Authorities have since charged him with murder with a deadly weapon.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.
