Teen charged in former Chaparral football player's killing identified

LAS VEGAS - The 17-year-old accused of killing former Chaparral High School football player Richard Nelson has been identified by police as Richard Newsome.

According to Metro Police, Newsome was certified as an adult and transferred to Clark County Detention Center on Wednesday.

Newsome and his mother, Tianna Thomas, were arrested on Jan. 17. Thomas faces one count of accessory to murder with a deadly weapon. Newsome is facing a murder charge.

Nelson was shot several times after he attempted to assist a family member in a fight outside of his home, police said.
