Watching pedestrians – like a hawk.
Even one fatal auto-pedestrian crash in the valley each year would be one too many. We’re well beyond that number in the first four months of 2019. the City of Henderson is trying a new approach with the installation of new equipment at two intersections there. At College Drive and Vermillion – pretty much Foothill High School’s front door; and at Valle Verde and Wigwam – near Greenspun Junior High – you’ll now see what are known as Hawk light signals. They have a specific set of lights to make passing drivers aware of pedestrians. A “hawk” is a “high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon.” The City of Henderson sent along a couple of photos. including a Hawk “how-to.”
It’s a little bit more than yellow and red lights. The explanation of what lights are going off when, and what both “drivers” *and* “pedestrians” will see may make more sense if you take the time to look it over it here on the 8NewsNow website. Bottom line: yellow lights are a sign that people and cars are going to need to pay closer attention, and red flashing lights are a sign to hit the brakes and let other walkers do their thing
Buckle up, drive carefully and put down that phone!
